Aged homes may have to show restraint data

Aged care homes could be forced to publish data about the physical and chemical restraint of elderly Australians in their care.

The aged care royal commission on Thursday handed down its interim report, saying immediate action is needed to address the sector’s “indiscriminate” and “unsafe” use of drugs and physical restraints.

“The provision of information to the public of every aged care residence’s use of restrictive practices would be a powerful way not only of informing the community but also of holding providers to account,” the report says.
